Jamie Aaksistowaki Medicine Crane is the creative force behind Brave Woman Botanicals & Designs. Aaksistowaki (pronounced ahk-sis-toe-wak-ee), means Brave Woman in Blackfoot.
Jamie is a proud member of the Kainai and Piikani Nations in Alberta, Canada. Raised with traditional teachings, ceremonies, and spirituality, she carries forward the knowledge that all beings – animate and inanimate – have a purpose in creation. She is a dedicated activist, advocate, educator, and multidisciplinary artist, deeply rooted in her Blackfoot heritage, working in her community to advance Indigenous rights, women’s rights, human rights, and justice.
Jamie has been designing for most of her life, with her earliest creations being doll and Barbie clothes, later evolving into the intricate artistry of powwow regalia – her greatest passion. Over the past decade, she has expanded into contemporary fashion, inspired by a desire to wear authentic designs that reflect Indigenous identity in everyday life.
Her biggest inspirations are the women in her life – her mother, aunties, and grandmother – who have passed down their knowledge as designers and creators.
Her brand, Brave Woman Designs, reflects the beauty and resilience of Blackfoot and Indigenous history. It seamlessly blends traditional and contemporary influences while honouring Mother Earth through sustainable and eco-conscious practices.
Through her designs, Jamie celebrates Indigenous culture, uplifts her community, and creates meaningful, wearable art.
